It was nearly suppertime when they reached home. Matt dismounted in the barnyard and held his arms up to Rachel. She hesitated only an instant then swung her leg over the pommel and hopped down. He folded her in his embrace for a moment, and she savored his warmth and the comfort of his strong arms around her.

“You go in,” he whispered. “I’ll put the horses up.”

She drew away from him and turned toward the house, but as she took a step, the door opened and Tom came onto the porch with Molly in his arms.

“Where you been?” he called.

“We heard from Rachel’s brother,” Matt said.

Tom stared at him, then at Rachel. “Your brother?” Ben appeared in the doorway beside him, and Tom came down the steps. “That’s wonderful, Rachel. An answer to prayer.”

“Yes.” She couldn’t help smiling. She and Matthew had smiled all the way home, partly because Caleb was alive and partly because of the current that jumped between them. Now she realized she had a large family here in Wyoming to share her news with. “We sent our message to him, and then we waited for a reply. He’s coming out here.”

“That’s… good news.”

“Do you mind?” she asked.

“No, of course not.” Tom swung Molly up onto his shoulders. “Is he planning to take you home with him?”

Rachel glanced at Matt, suddenly embarrassed. “I’m not sure.”

“We’ll take it as it comes,” Matt said, “but I’m thinking… we’re thinking Rachel might rather stay here.”

Tom grinned. “Well then, we’ll see what the Lord brings.”

“Where’s Amy?” Rachel asked. “I can’t wait to tell her.”

“She’s over to Lydia’s. You might want to go over. Amy can use your help.”

“You mean…?”

“I expect Lydia’s having the baby tonight.”

“I’d better get right over there!”

Matt fumbled with the thongs that held the sack of sugar to his saddle. “I’ll ride over with you and bring the horses back.”

“Bring Mike back, too,” Tom said. “He’s probably driving Amy and Lydia crazy.”
